Of Black Cats and Silver Foxes (Gibbs/Abby), PG13
« Thread Started on Mar 9, 2008, 6:10am »

Title: Of Black Cats and Silver Foxes
Rating: PG13
Characters/Pairing(s): Gibbs/Abby (you can read it as friendship if you try hard enough)
Disclaimer: These characters belong to DPB, CBS, Paramount, et al. No copyright infringement is intended.
Spoilers: up to 5.05
Warnings: Only read this if you like kitsch. :/
Author's Notes: Okay. I tried to write this close to canon. At first. Then I made the mistake to watch one of my collections of sweet Gabby scenes. And ever since it turned into almost unbearably sweet kitsch. *sighs at self* I’m sorry. Gibbs didn’t protest. It’s not my fault.
This was written for poor Abbyforever who seems to be on the receiving end of loads of silly fluff these days. *bites lip*

Of Black Cats and Silver Foxes

“So…” She feels hands on her shoulders before she can turn to face him. Shivers a little at the touch, but doesn’t turn to smile. He told her to leave. Just like that. Out of the blue. “…you’re feeling underappreciated, Ab?”

For a moment she considers to ignore him. But something tells him that she’ll fail. They solved the case. He’s got time to stay. And in a way she wanted him to come. Why else would she still be here?

“I don’t wanna talk about it. Go away.”

He walks away, leans against the wall. And she can feel his eyes on her. He’s not staring. But he is watching her.

“You know I don’t leave here before you do.”

She sighs. Of course she knows.

“Well I… I just want to finish something up. I’ll leave soon.”

“That’s good. I can wait.”

“There’s no reason for you to…”

Gibbs smiles. Shakes his head.

“You know that there’s always been the same reason for me not to leave this building before you do.”

“Because you want me safe while I’m in here?”

“No, I always want that. But here I have the best chances of keeping you safe.”

She shrugs, smiles wryly.

“Here I’ve been shot at and stalked. Your place was actually much safer.”

He’s still looking at her, calmly.

“So perhaps it would be best if I took you home with me then?”

She’s not sure if he’s offering what she thinks he’s offering. What she hopes he’s offering.

“I don’t think I’m in any kind of danger right now.”

He comes closer again. Stands behind her.

“Feeling very safe, Abs?”

And it’s too hard to resist the temptation of that purr. It’s too hard and she doesn’t want to. So she turns. Buries herself in his arms.

“I always feel safe around you.”

“Well you shouldn’t.”

There’s this boyish smile she loves so much. The reason why she can’t ever resist him.

“But I do.”

“Then why do you feel underappreciated, baby?”

His voice is soft now. And he rarely calls her baby. And she knows that he knows that she can never resist him. There’s two types of secrets she can have from Gibbs. There’s the secrets she wants to tell him about. And the secrets he makes her tell.

“Not underappreciated. I just thought that you…” She bits her lip, continues. “…are mad at me and...”

“Is there something I should know?”

“I… I thought that now that… I messed up…”

For a moment he’s silent, seems to try to make sense of her rambling. Then he chuckles, shakes his head at her.

“Abs you don’t feel bad ‘cause some jerk lured you and managed to make you leave him with evidence, d’you?”

“You…” This is so stupid. “You said that I never failed you. And then… then…” She doesn’t cry about nonsense like that.

“Abs.” He actually turns to check that nobody’s watching. And kisses her nose. “Abs you didn’t fail me. You screwed up. But not badly. Nobody got hurt. And we got that bastard.”

She rests her head against his shoulder, feels the words wash down. It’s what she wanted to hear. Needed to hear. It doesn’t convince her. But for now it’s enough if he believes that. And Gibbs doesn’t lie to her.

“You know that I love you, right?”

He doesn’t reply. But she feels his hand on the joint of her right shoulder and her neck. Feels the circles rubbed through the cloth of her blouse. And it’s so, so good. And she doesn’t want him to ever stop again. Purrs lowly in the back of her throat, just a soft vibrating of the vocal cords.

“So do I have my little kitten back now?”

It’s almost casual. But with Gibbs there’s more to most things than meets the eye.

“If you ever tell them…”

“What do you take me for, Abs? I’m not going to tell them that my team’s sorted into cats and dogs and parrots and...”

“And ducks.”

“And ducks.”

“You like cats best, don’t you?”

“Fishing for compliments, are we, Abs?”

She pouts a little. But it’s no use. He just tugs one of her pigtails and lets go. Makes her let go. And turns to leave.

“Coming, kitty?”

He holds out his hand and she takes it.

---

When she wakes up she’s alone. But she feels relaxed, better than she’s felt for days. Weeks. His bed smells so good, smells like all those scents you only pick up if you’re trained for it. And she’d like to just stay curled in his warm, fluffy dark blue blanket. Because there’s few things that feel that good. Of course she has to get up.

But she keeps his shirt on, just for now. She always wears it when she’s here. And she loves that it smells like him, not like her the next time she puts it on.

There’s a piece of paper on the nightstand. A little comic stripe. Black Cat washing her head. Black Cat having food. And Black Cat saluting to the Silver haired Fox – with her left paw, of course. She smirks. Quickly folds it and puts it into her handbag. Wouldn’t ever leave a Black Cat comic behind. Especially not one that stars Silver Fox.

In the bathroom she finds her toothbrush and toothpaste laid out next to a fresh cup. There’s a fresh towel. The dark red one. Cause that’s her favourite. And Gibbs would know nonsense like that. She finds what she needs, smells his shampoo. And resists the temptation to use it. Tony and McGee might miss it. But Ziva was capable of asking questions…

Wrapped up in Gibbs’ favourite towel she wanders to the kitchen. And smiles when she finds a caf pow, two blue-berry and two chocolate muffins. Gibbs really is an early riser. It’s strange he shows up for work so late on most days. But if it means she’ll get what she wants she most certainly won’t complain. After breakfast she visits with the boat to retrieve her stack of spare clothes, then reluctantly gets dressed. Gibbs doesn’t take her home whenever she feels like it. He takes her home when he thinks she needs him.

After cleaning away the crockery and putting everything that needs washing into the washing machine –including her… well his… shirt- she blow-dries her hair, then takes the bus to work and greets Bert and the babies. And there they are.

Black roses. But what matters far more is the small card attached to them. And it’s the same picture he draws for her birthday presents. Cause he knows it’s her favourite. Silverfox signing ‘I love you’ to Black Cat.

Awww, thanks so much. It's awfully kitschy, but I still like it a lot. :)
